Jewelry: Lyon is the cradle of fine jewelry

Jewelry is a historical and economic reality for the Lyon urban area, which today aggregates the largest number of jewelers in France, and is the place with the most hallmarks.

Lyon accounts for 13% of national jobs in this sector, that is more than 1,500 jobs with 226 retailers.

Historical expertise

A place where exchanges have taken place for centuries, Lyon enjoys a grand jewelry-making tradition, thanks to its geographical situation. The historical capital of the jewelry industry since the 16th century, Lyon continues this tradition with over 3 million items of jewelry produced in the region's 400 workshops.

This tradition brought to life some major names in the Lyon jewelry trade. Some disappeared after the wars (Aubertin, Breliquiet), but others are still going strong (Augis 1830 and De Beaumont: two houses resulting from a long family tradition).

A position that guarantees constant growth

Lyon has a productive network, characterized by the presence of very well-known brands (Korloff, Augis, etc.), and by several companies with vast expertise, which brings them to work for several brands located on the "Place Vendôme" in Paris.

Thanks to its creative and top-of-range positioning (particularly for fashion accessories), the Lyon jewelry trade is developing faster than the rest of the sector.

A full and rich industrial sector

The world of jewelry in Lyon is mainly composed of craftsmen and small companies (110 companies), but several small and medium-sized companies and industries also bring their contribution (Delatour, for example).

These companies are especially varied and complementary:

cohabitation of companies of various sizes and with different internal organizations (craftsmen, entrepreneurs, medium and large manufacturing companies),
manufacturers of finished products with their own brand and/or working as outsourcers for other companies (Korloff, Marie Michaud Créations, Alain Roure, Groupe Augis, etc.),
jewelry repairers or "adapters" (Lacour SA),
service providers working in professions related to jewelry.

Young designers

In addition to this long tradition, the branch enjoys the presence of young designers. Korloff and Marie Michaud Créations have taken less than 20 years to establish themselves in the ultra-selective jewelry universe. And the new generations already compete with them, like Yannick Monchanin, Olivier Durbano, Laurence Opperman (all in the Passage Thiaffait), who fit into the universe of fashion in the broadest sense.

A training framework that corresponds to the importance of the sector

In both initial and ongoing training, the Lyon urban area has an effective training base, with the SEPR (one of 12 jewelry training centers listed by the Fédération Française HBJO – French federation of watchmakers, jewelers, and goldsmiths):

a training offer that answers the demand expressed by professionals,
high-level training with the new DMA diploma (the SEPR is one of the only two French organizations to offer this course).
