The knowledge economy market

Around 70 companies in the Lyon conurbation are involved in EDM, knowledge management (KM) and e-learning, accounting for approximately 1,200 jobs. Almost 60% of these are company head offices.

Key figures:

	The EDM market in France represents 853 million euros, 50% up on 1999 (survey by APROGED, 2001).
	The world market for KM software was assessed at 14 billion euros in 2002 (interactive business). In France, analysts observed an annual growth of 45% in 2004.
	The e-learning market in Europe represented 32 millions euro in 1997, 80 million euros in 1998, and 463 million euros in 2001 (Datamonitor).

Considerable potential in Electronic Document Management (EDM)

With around twenty company head offices and fifteen specialized publishers, the Lyon conurbation is the second center in France for EDM, after the Ile-de-France region.

EDM technologies are now mature, and the market is growing. The field of data acquisition, in particular automatic document processing (ADP) is especially buoyant.

EDM is opening up to emerging markets (content management, knowledge management and customer relations management), and is evolving thanks to their input.

The various players in the sector are:

	software companies specialized in EDM, or generalist software companies,
	digital application providers,
	system integrators and consultancy firms,
	hardware manufacturers.

The leading companies are firmly rooted.
