Summary

Lyon, security standard-bearer

The security market in Rhône-Alpes represents over 200 millions euros, achieved by 266 companies. The region accounts for almost 8% of the turnover in France, and over 10% of investments.

Lyon is the second urban area after Paris for the number of private sector security jobs (over 10,500 jobs). It is recognized as the standard-bearer for the South-East quarter of France, with regional head offices such as Securitas or Mather et Platt installed here. It is also the first police center in France after the capital.

Private security, a growing sector

The growing need for security expressed by companies and individuals alike, and the saturation of public means, are two factors that explain the development of paying security services. Although the public sector remains predominant (the gendarmerie, and national and local polices, include 225,000 people in France), the private sector occupies an ever growing space, with almost 100,000 jobs.

The private security market is linked to the outsourcing of the management of certain risks by companies, local authorities and various organizations: risks related to theft and burglaries, immaterial risks, public safety.

Public security

The security sector is already well represented in the Lyon region, which accommodates three large public entities:

The Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la Police (ENSP - police graduate school), in Saint-Cyr-au-Mont-d'Or, which trains all police captains (commissaires) in France, provides continuing education and welcomes foreign students.
The Police Technique et Scientifique (PTS - technical and scientific police) now has its headquarters in Lyon, following its relocation. It groups together three fields of activity: the central laboratories service, the central criminal records office, and the national criminal documentation center, which constitutes the national police force's memory.
INTERPOL (International Criminal Police Organization) has had its international headquarters in Lyon since 1989. Interpol is responsible for cross-border criminal police cooperation for 177 countries.
Lyon offers the first DESS (1-year postgraduate diploma) in criminalistics in France, introduced in 1999 at the Lyon 1 University, in partnership with the technical and scientific police (PTS). Its goal is to train scientific investigation specialists.
