Summary

With a rich and varied potential in the field of Life Science, Greater Lyon is building and setting up a global strategy, which will position Lyon among the top 5 European biotechnology centers.

An international ambition supported by the public authorities

Life Science: an economic priority for Greater Lyon

The challenge for development in this sector is twofold:

biotechnology companies use the latest scientific developments for biological or pharmaceutical-oriented research, which means that this sector is securing the renewal of the pharmaceutical industry, a traditional sector of excellence in Lyon (around 12,000 jobs), with an international impact (400 billion dollars),

the aging population, health expenditure, and new diseases, all contribute to expanding the market in this sector, and they have strong ethical and reglementary repercussions.

In order to promote and develop the Bio-cluster, Greater Lyon and its partners in the "Greater Lyon, a Business Spirit" project, along with the Département and the region, have undertaken to provide in the metropolitan area the best conditions for business creation and development in biotechnology-, health-, and health technology-related activities.

Greater Lyon's strategy has 4 main development focuses:

1 - develop areas of excellence and framework projects,

2 - encourage entrepreneurship in biotechnology, and stimulate the cluster organization,

3 - develop a dedicated property and real estate supply,

4 - encourage expansion and international marketing.

Major transversal projects contribute to boosting the cluster's development. This is particularly true of the Bioparc real estate project, and the international Biovision project.
