Summary

Greater Lyon and the conurbation's large companies enjoy a mutual complementarity relationship on the territory. Because these companies play a leading role in the local economy fabric, we must acknowledge this by providing them with a whole range of services adapted to their needs.

The unmistakable weight of large companies in the Lyon conurbation

Significant job creators

While SMEs and SMIs generate a lot of jobs, the impact of big companies on the region cannot be overlooked. The 282 public and private companies with more than 250 employees in the Lyon urban area account for 25% of total job numbers

An important source of fiscal revenue

Since January 1, 2003, business tax is the biggest source of fiscal revenue for urban communities. In Lyon, 25 companies account for more than 22% of the business tax base.

The main land owners

The urban area large companies remain the biggest land owners. Land and property policy is traditionally one of the urban community's main means of political action. A good understanding between the urban community and the corporations also enables a better control of areas to be allocated.

A ratchet effect on SMEs and SMIs

The arrival of a big corporation has a sizeable impact on the existing network of SMEs and SMIs. This economic fabric benefits from new learning opportunities as soon as new processes or technologies appear. Many SMEs and SMIs can diversify or access international markets as a result. This is especially important since Lyon has a particularly extensive network of sub-contractors. In the research sector, Lyon boasts an enormous potential that must get in contact with the large companies.
